Have You Been Watching “Who Do You Think You Are?” on NBC on Friday Evening at 7 PM?

Hi Everyone!

I sure hope you have found some time to watch NBC’s “Who Do You Think You Are?” on Friday evenings at 7 PM Chicago time.

So far there have been 4 episodes broadcast for this new season of material.

If you have not been able to view them or save them on your VCR or DVR you can always check out episodes you have missed and stories about the show by visiting the NBC web site at http://www.nbc.com/who-do-you-think-you-are/ .

I will say the episodes have been very good and have been especially filled with emotion.  So far Vanessa Williams, Tim McGraw, Rosie O’Donnell and Kim Cattrall have been featured in the 4 episodes that have aired.

Each star has been seen as researching their ancestral roots by tracing from the “known” to the “unknown” a technique which is critical to successful research.  Each discovery then builds a base upon which to work further back.

Many of the stars have been able to trace back on direct lineage on names that are not their own surnames.

Librarians and researchers have helped them in their quest for information and have passed the star over to another researcher as information is discovered and other facts are discovered needing further research.

I don’t want to give out any of the surprises that were discovered other than to say you may not have a “dry eye” in the house by the time you get to the end of the show.

It appears that there will be at least 5 more new episodes to follow over the next five weeks.  These shows are very good.  You will discover pieces of research resources and techniques that may apply to your own research efforts.

It is really heartwarming to see these “major” stars experience the same feeling and emotions that you and I have routinely experienced.  Their reactions are very sincere, touching  and honest as I perceive them.  They have discovered good and bad about their ancestors just as we have.

If you have not experienced this show you should give it a try.  I think you will be more informed after viewing a show and I also believe you will be even more motivated with your own personal research.

Enjoy the balance of the season of “Who Do You think You Are?”

I’ve seen all of the episodes and found them informational. I am a novice researcher and don’t have much time to devote to my quest so anytime I can be entertained AND learn at the same time works for me. My family is from Poland/Austria/Hungary where the borders frequently changed in the late 19th and early 20th century when they arrived. It has been challenging especially since I don’t speak Polish.

    • Hi Dorothy,

Thanks for visiting my library blog on genealogy.

The episodes this year are very good and I think very emotional. It is good to see “more famous” people expressing the exact same feeling you and I have felt and experienced. I do feel their emotions are sincere and real!

It sure would be nice to see some program from the producers that would incoporate someone researching their Polish roots. My roots are also Polish as is yours. Maybe something like that is on the drawing board?

Don’t forget to visit the Polish Genealogical Society of America website if you are not familiar with or are not a member of the society. There are great resources at the site to help you with Polish research. Check it out at http://www.pgsa.org. Most Polish researchers as yourself and myself don’t speak the language. But we are determined enough to try to find workarounds all the time.

Keep plugging away and continued good luck in any future research.

      Tony Kierna
