I Would Like To Get To The Main Part of Our Monthly Genealogy Program 15 Minutes Earlier From Now On

Hi Everyone!

For those of you that have attended any of our monthly genealogy programs in the past, you may be aware of the following timeline of events I have followed:

  • Program starts at 7:30 PM
  • We have introductions of new participants
  • I review my “handout” package for the program
  • Take any general Q & A from those in attendance
  • Main part of the program, either speaker or breakout groups, starts between 8:00 to 8:15 PM
  • We end the program between 9:15 to 9:30 PM

It has been suggested that it would be more beneficial if I were to reduce the time I have spent on reviewing the Handout material in order to get to the main part of the program a little quicker.  This would allow more un-rushed time at the end for participants to intermingle, talk to the speaker or talk to me.

It does seem like a good idea to consider reducing time spent on the handouts for the simple reason that the handouts are a PDF file as part of the blog and participants can spend more productive time themselves reviewing the handout on their own time.

It makes sense to me!

So my plan going forward on the evening of our program night is the following:

  • Program starts at 7:30 PM
  • Introduction of new participants
  • Brief review of only some of the programs that will be occurring in the area for other groups and societies and for our own next month’s program.
  • Take any general Q & A from those in attendance
  • Start the main part of the evening program by 7:45 PM or no later than 8:00 PM.

That should give everyone more time at the end of the program to interact at a more leisurely pace.  It will also allow those that want to get home a little earlier to be able to do so!

I have often found myself at 9:30 trying to begin cleaning up, interacting with the speaker and interacting with those having questions for me.  It has honestly felt too rushed and I have not been able to provide full attention to those still in attendance.

Giving us back those additional 15 minutes should make the end of the night a lot less hurried.

I am always available to take any questions on the handout material any time after it has been read at a more leisurely pace.  So I do not feel the need to cover everything in a hurried manner during the evening.

I have actually started doing this process during our March and April programs and it does seem to be working quite well.

I just wanted to make this a little more official by letting everyone know my intentions via this blog post.

I hope everyone will feel OK with this new target goal of getting to the main part of our program by 7:45 to 8:00 PM rather than 8:00 to 8:15 PM.

Even though I do enjoy talking to everyone present about anything genealogy, I will not feel offended by reducing my talk time on the handouts by 15 minutes in order to make things a little less hectic at the end of the evening!!!

Salvaging Photos Trapped in 1970s Albums of “Glued” Sheets with Mylar Plastic Covering

Hi Everyone!

I was reading the May 2011 newsletter created by the Chicago Genealogical Society and noticed an article that was created by the society President, Tom Mackowiak.  The topic of his article was about his involvement in working with photos he and his brother received after the death of their mother.

He described a situation very similar to one that we all have faced or will face in the future about photo albums – the dreaded albums sheets that adhere to the underlying photos.  The problem is how to safely remove these photos from the grips of the pages in order to secure them in a more archival safe storage material.

Tom included a link in the article to a source he used to follow giving some insights on how to remove photos that are contained in these old, destructive albums.

Hopefully, the article will help you to safely remove any photos you may have in your own collections that need to be preserved.

I have had pictures trapped in such material and I was able to safely remove about 95% of what I had that were in these terrible sticky,plastic sheets.  They came out relatively unscathed. 

One lesson to learn, consider scanning the photo trapped below the plastic sheet BEFORE YOU BEGIN TRYING TO REMOVE IT AND POSSIBLY INCUR DAMAGING IT DURING THE PROCESS!!

If it is destroyed during removal, at least you will have a scanned image of the photo in the best shape that it can be in.

Expect that you will lose some photos in the “salvation” process.  They will be stuck and will tear or rip in small pieces no matter how careful you are.

Thank goodness that we are more understanding today of using archival material to save our photos.  But even digital photos taken today may not wind up being printed but rather simply stored on the memory chip where they are captured.  That presents an entirely different issue of preservation into the future!!

Our Next Genealogy Program Is Coming Up On Tuesday Evening May 10, 2011 At 7:30 PM

Hi Everyone!

I thought I would post this reminder of our next upcoming Genealogy Program at the Schaumburg Township District Library.

There is no pre-registration required in order to attend the program.  There is no fee charged to attend.  Anyone can attend this program.  You do not have to be a library card holder with the Schaumburg Township District Library in order to attend.

Here are the details of our upcoming program for Tuesday evening, May 10, 2011:

The Genealogy program will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 7:30 PM in the 2nd floor Classroom. The guest speaker for the evening will be Dr. Paul Valasek. Paul will present a program titled “Why My Austro-Hungarian Ancestors Were Neither Austrian or Hungarian”.

Paul will provide us with research tips on Eastern European research that can help those of us researching this ancestral connection to more effectively find information on these Eastern European ancestors.

Paul Valasek, DDS, is a three time graduate of Loyola University of Chicago, earning his Doctorate in Dentistry in 1984. Born and raised in Chicago, he and his wife Andrea, have always been interested in their ancestries and where their families came from in Europe.

Paul’s first of numerous trips to Europe was in 1974 with his immigrant grandfather Joseph Valasek, a major turning point in his life.

Dr. Valasek has written numerous articles for genealogical publications, as well as being an international lecturer. He recently completed his first book, Haller’s Polish Army in France which makes available long lost and obscure material detailing the formation of this fighting force of over 23,000 Polish Americans in World War I and the subsequent Polish Soviet War of 1919-1921. He also has the most complete database of the army with over 3 million facts accumulated to date.

The doors to the room will open at approximately 7 PM so participants can pick up any handouts, review books and journals and interact with other participants. Tony Kierna, the STDL genealogist, will start the program at 7:30.  Introductions of new participants will occur as well as a brief review of handouts and genealogical matters.  It is expected that the guest speaker’s presentation will start at around 7:45 – 8 PM. We will end the session by 9:30 PM.

Northwest Suburban Council of Genealogists (NWSCG) Next Program Scheduled for Tuesday Evening, May 17, 2011 At 7:30 PM

Hi Everyone,

I just received a program notice from the Northwest Suburban Council of Genealogists indicating that their next genealogy program is scheduled for Tuesday evening, May 17, 2011 at 7:30 PM.

The speaker for the evening will be Caron Primas Brennan.  The speaker will present a program titled “Uff Da! Researching My Norwegian Roots”.

I have not seen any speakers in the area that have presented programs on Norwegian ancestral research.  If this is an area of genealogical research interest to you then this would be the opportunity to listen to Caron and see what advances you can make in your Norwegian ancestral research from the material presented by Caron.

Caron will be coming to our own library in January 2012 to give us an overview of using social media like FaceBook to advance your genealogical research.
