Footnote.com Will Be Changing It’s Name to Fold3 After Having Been Purchased by Ancestry.com

Hi Everyone!

One of the genealogy databases that our library makes available to both users on our premises as well as to Schaumburg Township District Library cardholders from home is one known as Footnote.com.

Footnote.com has been acquired by Ancestry.com and apparently as a part of this merger will be changing its name from the Footnote .com name we are all familiar with to Fold3.

The Fold3 name is derived from the third fold in a traditional military flag folding ceremony which “is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.”

Footnote.com, now Fold3, has been known for its focus on military records in its collection.

Dick Eastman had an extensive blog post in his online newsletter about this event.  You can read the full posting at the following link:

Footnote.com Purchased By Ancestry.com and Footnote to Change Name to Fold3

I thought I would give you a “heads-up” in case you start seeing the name of Fold3 appearing throughout the web and may be wondering what happened to Footnote.com.

As of now our own internal references to Footnote.com will still be as that.  You should still see Footnote.com listed as that name in the series of genealogy databases we offer.

As always, the perpetual “dance” is always going on among providers of genealogy data and Ancestry.com snares another one!
