Some Interesting Statistics On The Use Of The Internet, E-Mail, Social Media And Cell Phones By Senior Citizens; How Do You Compare?

Hi Everyone!

One of our Reference Librarians here made me aware of a very interesting Internet site that is put together by the Pew Internet Organization.  This group does frequent surveys on a variety of topics.  This particular survey caught my attention because it focused on statistical results generated by Senior Citizens and their Internet/E-Mail/Social Media/Cell Phone usage and habits.

Here is a short summary of some of the highlights of the findings of the survey:

Older Adults and Internet Use – from Pew Internet & American Life Project. As of April 2012, 53% of American adults age 65 and older use the internet or email.  As of February 2012, one third (34%) of internet users age 65 and older use social networking sites such as Facebook, and 18% do so on a typical day. By comparison, email use continues to be the bedrock of online communications for seniors. As of August 2011, 86% of internet users age 65 and older use email, with 48% doing so on a typical day. A growing share of seniors own a cell phone. Some 69% of adults ages 65 and older report that they have a mobile phone, up from 57% in May 2010. Report also compares usage in various age groups.

You can visit the following web site for even more details of the actual survey itself:

I find these studies fascinating because I like to compare the results obtained in the studies to my own personal habits as they apply to my Internet activity, E-mail activity and the like.

How do you compare?  Similarly or just the opposite?

While this is not directly related to genealogy, in  a way it is because our research efforts are often so dependent on our Internet access to find answers to our own research.  Social Media use, Cell Phone use and E-Mail use are key ingredients today in our genealogy research efforts.

Check out the above link to the full survey to see how your own habits fit in with the results of this interesting study.
