Fountaindale Public Library In Bolingbrook Has Previously Recorded Videos Of Their 2016 And 2017 “Genealogy Day” Programs Online; Approximately 9 Hours Of Recording Among 6 Programs

Hi Everyone!

While perusing among some genealogical information online,  I just happened to cross paths with some material from a genealogy librarian colleague from Fountaindale Public Library in Bolingbrook.

Not only has Debra Dudek of the Fountaindale Public Library offered Irish Genealogy Programs in conjunction with the Ulster Historical Foundation, but she has also been holding an annual “Genealogy Day” Program.  The “Genealogy Day” Program generally consists of three 90 minute programs.  That alone is incredible.  But to top it off, Debra, video records each program and makes them available to view online.  In fact, the original programs were streamed LIVE on the day of the event over the internet!  Pretty impressive!

Here is the link where you can find these “Genealogy Day” Programs from 2016 and 2017:

2016 and 2017 “Genealogy Day” Recorded Programs from the Fountaindale Public Library

The 2016 programs under the theme of “Hunting Down Sensational Stories” were:

  • “Using History Lines to Tell Your Family Story” presented by Adam Allgaier  (Program actually starts about 90 seconds after you start “play”.)
  • “Sensational Deaths and Where to Find Them” presented by Tina Beaird  (Program starts about 30 seconds after you start “play”.)
  • “Tracking Infamous Ancestors in Court Records” by Raymond Johnson  (Program starts about 30 seconds after you start “play”.)

The 2017 programs under the theme of “Crime, Fame, and Other Genealogical Confessions” were:

  • “Genetic Genealogy” presented by Robert Sliwinski  (The video has a slow introduction and some initial audio problems for about the first 90 seconds but then it is fine).
  • “Are You Related to Someone Famous?” presented by Robert Allen
  • “Where the Murderers Roam” presented by Dr. Daniel Hubbard

For the 2017 programs, you can even access the handouts that were used for the 2017 programs.  They are linked right under the 3rd video when you get to the site.  I did not see any handout links for the 2016 program.

Perhaps the topics may be of interest to your own research efforts?  Maybe they just sound interesting and you want to learn more about an aspect of genealogy you are not familiar with.

Each video is about 90 minutes in length.  Get comfortable.  Get a cup of coffee or tea.  Hit the play button and you will be on your way.

A big “Thank You” to Debra Dudek and the Fountaindale Public Library for making these recorded genealogy program videos available to all when they are able.

Reminder: Our Next Genealogy Program at STDL Is Tomorrow June 13, 2017

Hi Everyone!

I thought I would post this reminder of our next upcoming Genealogy Program at the Schaumburg Township District Library.

There is no pre-registration required in order to attend the program.  There is no fee charged to attend.  Anyone can attend this program.  You do not have to be a library card holder with the Schaumburg Township District Library in order to attend.

Here are the details of our upcoming program for Tuesday evening, June 13, 2017:

The Genealogy program will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 7:30 PM in the 2nd floor Classroom. There is no formal presentation for this gathering. Instead, we will have our breakout group discussions so participants can work within a small group of people having specific interests in a common genealogical topic. The object is to share information and experience on this topic among those in the breakout group.

We are planning on having the same breakout groups we had in our previous breakout groups based on various nationalities. These will be Polish, Czech, German, Irish, British, Italian, Scandinavian, and Colonial American. There will also be a “new” DNA/Adoption table. Finally, there will also be a Beginners Group.

A laptop computer connected to our projector will also be available in the room to use by those in attendance. Participants are also encouraged to bring in their own lap top or net book to connect wirelessly to the library’s WiFi Network. This will allow the user to share information with other participants in areas of genealogical research.

Some of the above mentioned groups may be eliminated if there are not enough participants in any one group to make it beneficial. Some groups that have not been identified may be added.

The doors to the room will open at approximately 7 PM so participants can pick up the handouts, review books and journals and interact with other participants. Tony Kierna, the STDL genealogist, will start the program at 7:30. Introductions of new participants will occur as well as a brief review of handouts and genealogical matters. It is expected that the breakout groups will form at around 7:45-8:00 PM. We will end the session by 9:30 PM.

For further information contact Tony Kierna at 847-923-3390.

Computer Assisted Genealogy Group Of Northern Illinois (CAGGNI) Offers Internet Special Interest Group (SIG) On Saturday June 10, 2017

Hi Everyone!

CAGGNI logo

Just want to make everyone aware that the Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois (CAGGNI) has an Internet special interest group (SIG).

I just received an email from the group indicating that their next meeting will take place on Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 12:45 PM to 2:30 PM at the Schaumburg Township District Library.

All are welcome to attend.  You do not have to be a member of the group in order to participate.  See what this SIG is all about as well as see what CAGGNI is all about.

Here is the text describing what will take place at this upcoming Internet SIG:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Internet Genealogical Services include Ancestry, Family Search, My Heritage, Find My Past, WikiTree and many others.  The Internet Special Interest Group intends to review questions about these services and have a dialog on the advantages and features of the services used by members.  This complements the features available from computer programs such as Family Tree Maker or RootsMagic that exploit the on-line databases available from the internet services.

Facilitator:  Alan Wilson

For more information: Internet Special Interest Group

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Consider connecting with this special interest group within the CAGGNI organization that is local to our area.  You may have a vested interest with personal subscriptions to many of these services.  Why not get to know how to better use them in your online searches or uploads.

Learn from others, help others.

You can always visit the general website of the CAGGNI group to see what they are all about.  And I can guarantee you they are about many things genealogically speaking, including having this Internet SIG group.  You can visit CAGGNI at:
